A recent Consumer Reports study suggested that Walmart may no longer have the lowest grocery prices. Using Walmart as the benchmark, researchers found six retailers with lower overall prices.
Costco ranked as the least expensive, with prices averaging 21.4% below Walmart. BJ’s Wholesale Club followed closely at 21% lower. Lidl and Aldi were 8.5% and 8.3% cheaper, respectively, while WinCo and H-E-B also came in slightly below Walmart.
At the other end of the spectrum, Amazon-owned Whole Foods Market was the most expensive in the study, with prices nearly 40% higher than Walmart. Shaw’s and El Rancho were also significantly higher.
The research was conducted by Strategic Resource Group, which collected prices in stores during late summer 2025. The comparison baskets included packaged goods, produce, and meat, though the number of items varied by retailer depending on product assortment.
