Kroger’s long-rumored push into Florida appears to be coming to an abrupt end. Reports indicate the grocer has scrapped plans for approximately 80 Harris Teeter stores across the state, including several planned upscale 65,000-square-foot locations. Only a previously announced Jacksonville store remains under construction.
The move follows Kroger’s recent decision to shut down its Florida fulfillment network and terminate related incentive agreements, signaling a broader retreat from the market after several years of attempting to gain traction through ecommerce and delivery rather than traditional stores.
Meanwhile, Kroger’s attention has shifted to its proposed $1.65 billion acquisition of Giant Eagle, where store divestitures in overlapping markets such as Columbus, Ohio, may become necessary to satisfy regulators. Potential buyers for those locations could include BJ’s Wholesale Club, Target and Meijer.
