Delaware remains an active market for grocery expansion, with several notable supermarket projects highlighting the state’s continued appeal to both traditional and discount grocers.
In Middletown, Weis Markets recently opened a new 64,000-square-foot store at Bayberry Town Center, anchoring the 280,000-square-foot retail development that serves the rapidly growing Village of Bayberry community. The project represents one of the most significant recent grocery investments in the state.
Weis is also expanding elsewhere in Delaware. The company is developing a 65,000-square-foot store at Peninsula Crossing in Millsboro, further reinforcing its commitment to growth in Sussex County.
Meanwhile, Lidl is preparing to open a new store at Shoppes of Graylyn in North Wilmington, taking over a former Rite Aid location on Marsh Road. The project highlights the continued trend of expanding grocers repurposing former drug store and retail boxes throughout the Mid-Atlantic.
In New Castle County, Redner’s Fresh Market is backfilling a former ACME location on Kirkwood Highway, preserving the site’s role as a grocery-anchored destination while bringing a new operator into the market.
Taken together, these projects demonstrate that Delaware continues to attract significant grocery investment. From new ground-up developments to adaptive reuse opportunities, both traditional and discount grocers remain active in the state, reinforcing the ongoing importance of supermarkets as shopping center anchors and traffic drivers.
