Walmart has opened a new 45,000-square-foot Neighborhood Market in Mesquite, Texas, offering a look at the retailer’s latest approach to its smaller, grocery-focused format.
The new store is significantly smaller than a traditional Walmart Supercenter and is centered around groceries, fresh foods and convenience. Features include wider aisles, updated signage, streamlined checkout, sushi prepared in-store, fresh-cut fruit, grab-and-go meals, deli selections, fresh tortillas and a pharmacy. Customers can also use pickup and delivery, including Express Delivery in as little as 30 minutes.
The Mesquite store is part of Walmart’s next generation of Neighborhood Markets. While Walmart has also experimented with Neighborhood Markets as large as 57,000 square feet, the company has said it intends to “right-size” individual stores based on the needs of each community.
The smaller format gives Walmart considerably more flexibility from a real estate standpoint than its traditional Supercenter. At approximately 45,000 square feet, the Mesquite store falls squarely within the size range occupied by many conventional supermarkets and could potentially allow Walmart to pursue sites and shopping centers that would not accommodate a Supercenter.
