Independent grocery operators continued to demonstrate resilience through fiscal 2025, according to the National Grocers Association’s 2026 U.S. Independent Grocers Financial Study. Despite cautious consumer spending, elevated household debt, and ongoing economic uncertainty, operators maintained modest sales growth while improving gross margins through disciplined cost control, inventory management, and promotional strategies.
Consumer shopping habits also continued to evolve. Rather than spending more during each visit, shoppers made more frequent trips while purchasing fewer items. Value remained the primary focus, with consumers gravitating toward promotions and private-label products. Independent grocers responded by expanding loyalty programs, increasing digital engagement, and emphasizing fresh food departments.
