Amazon closing in on Costco for No. 2 spot in grocery market share

Amazon is on the verge of overtaking Costco as the nation’s second-largest consumer packaged goods (CPG) retailer, trailing the warehouse giant by just 0.1 percentage points. While Walmart remains the clear market leader, new Numerator data shows Amazon and Whole Foods gained a full percentage point of CPG market share over the past year—representing more than $16 billion in additional spending.

The gains were fueled by more households shopping with Amazon and customers making more frequent purchases, reinforcing the company’s growing role in everyday grocery shopping. Costco continues to widen its lead over Sam’s Club, but Amazon is increasingly winning spending from warehouse club shoppers as well. Walmart also posted gains in shopper traffic and grocery market share, underscoring the intensifying competition among the nation’s largest food retailers.
