Grocery Outlet is resuming its expansion after a major restructuring earlier this year. The discount grocer plans to open 30 to 33 new stores in 2026, beginning with an Ontario Ranch, California location next week, followed by additional openings in Ramona, San Francisco, Clovis and Petaluma.
The renewed growth comes after Grocery Outlet closed 36 underperforming stores in markets where it said it had expanded too aggressively (six stores closed in NJ and three in PA). Despite those closures, the company reported first-quarter sales increased 3.6% to $1.17 billion, while comparable-store sales declined just 1%—better than its previous forecast. CEO Jason Potter said the retailer is seeing success by expanding its assortment of extreme-value products that appeal to bargain-focused shoppers.
