Walmart Still Leads Grocery—But the Gap Is Shrinking

David Goodman | Apr 22, 2026 |

Walmart remains the dominant force in U.S. grocery with a 19.9% market share, but its lead is slowly eroding as competitors gain ground. Costco continues to climb, now at 8.2%, while Amazon/Whole Foods are seeing the fastest growth, reaching 8% of the CPG market. Meanwhile, traditional grocers like Kroger and Albertsons are losing share, signaling a gradual but meaningful shift in where consumers are spending their grocery dollars—even if Walmart isn’t in immediate danger of being caught.
